Story of the Cover: Last & Certainly The Least

Sometimes asking for more, is not a good thing… In fact, it can turn out to be a bit of a disaster!

After seeing the first three cover drafts for the book, we wanted a few more ideas, even though we were pretty sure that draft number three was the one we wanted to go for…

Well, draft number four, looked like something falling around in Old Compton Street on a Saturday morning after a HEAVY Friday night out on the trot… No seriously, joking aside, Much as this cover had the complete spec – pen, handwritten letter and images, it was obviously not what we wanted… Sexy yes! But we all know sexy with too much of an edge can be… well… sleazy.  Again, nothing wrong with that, but there is a time and a place for everything…

The only thing that worked on this cover, was the tagline: Gay men reflect on their lives. Perfect! But for the rest… it’s right out the window…

Cover number three springs to mind again… It was simple and to the point. Did anyone bring it along, today?

Attempt number five and six did not even get five minutes in the spotlight. One looked like a Mills and Boons schoolboy summer camp journal and the other one, like an 80s family planning manual. That certainly was not going to cut the mustard.

No, it was number three, wasn’t? That’s the one…

Did anyone see that draft cover?

What?

Misplaced it?

Really?

You’ll just have to wait and see till cover three is tweaked and finished to perfection before we show it to you.

Watch this space.
